OUR MISSION

Hundreds of Fishermen and Sailors use the Lake Townsend Marina Docks in Brown Summit, NC year round.

The dock surfaces and edges at Lake Townsend are in total disrepair and have become hazardous from normal weathering, aging and use. They are disintegrating, with splinters, holes, flexing, and missing edge bumpers for boat protection.

The floating docks for the rental sailboats are sinking and breaking up.

In addition, the boat ramp, shore bulkheads, sidewalk, rainfall run-off berm, and rental boat storage racks have deteriorated and badly need restoration.

If something is not done, these facilities will soon be unusable.

WHY DO WE NEED THE FUNDS?

The City of Greensboro Department of Parks & Recreation currently has no repair budget for the docks nor shoreline installations. The City of Greensboro Capital Improvement Budget related to the Lakes does not commence until 2025 - with any improvements not expected until 2028 (if at all).

With your help, we can pull together the resources needed to replace and restore this vital community resource.

PROJECT PRIORITIES

The primary objective of Save The Docks is to help fund the replacement of:

The wood dock surfaces

The posts that hold the throwable safety life rings

The rental sailboat dock and boat storage racks

The main dock boat protection edging

A secondary objective is to help fund the restoration of:

The washed out bulkheads and wooden edging adjacent to the rental boat equipment storage shed.

The washed out sidewalk adjacent to the bulkheads

The ground under the rental boat equipment storage shed, which has washed out, leaving the building unsupported at one end.

The degraded parking lot run-off berm to prevent future unwanted erosion of the bulkheading and the ground under the equipment shed.

HOW WILL THE FUNDS BE USED?

These repairs will enhance the safety, access, utility and appearance of the Lake Townsend docks, which are enjoyed by so many people year-round.

Funds will be used as seed money and combined with additional fund raising through the non-profit Greensboro Parks Foundation. This foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt non-profit with all the procedures to manage the funds in a tax exempt manner. The foundation has a pool of philanthropists and other potential funding sources that, hopefully, will add to the funds raised.

Upon project approval by the City of Greensboro Department of Parks & Recreation, the Foundation will submit those funds for the sole purpose of dock repair and restoration.

At this time, we need pledges to donate funds. Upon approval of the project by the City of Greensboro Department of Parks & Recreation, donors should honor their pledges. Instructions for where to donate will be forthcoming.
